MacHeist 3:Mac Giving Tree
From WikiHeist, the unofficial MacHeist wiki
Mission Background
Following a tradition started in last year's MacHeist II, Phill Ryu announced the return of the Mac Giving Tree to start off this year's heist in a post made on 19 December 2008. An earlier post on 16 December entitled Journey to the North had hinted at the Giving Tree's website which initially revealed only a small sapling. The sapling grew into the Giving Tree over the course of a couple days. The tree's artwork was credited to David Lanham by Ryu.
Registering for MacHeist entitles users to the gifts under the tree. Two are available immediately with the other two to be revealed on Christmas Day. Two additional presents, also to be revealed on Christmas, may be obtained by getting friends to register as well.

For a period of a couple of hours on December 22, 2008 the Giving Tree was "blooming" and giving away free iPhone/ iPod Touch apps to users. The apps icons would grow somewhere on the tree and the start shaking (like when moving apps on the iPhone home screen), the goal was to click on the apps when this happened. The exact rules on how users won the apps are still not know; two ideas exist though: The first user to click on the app, and a random user who clicked. Applications would appear multiple times on the tree throughout the time it was blooming.
